Explanations
The best form of prayer is:
- First, purity of heart. If your heart is not pure, the Holy Spirit will not hear or accept your prayers. A pure heart does not think of evil, does not say vulgar words, does not commit evil, does not bear grudges, does not doubt God and is not troublesome.
- Second is obedience. Obedience is better than sacrifice. It is better to do the little things God wants from us than to be doing fasting every day, attending all crusades, sleeping on the mountains, praying in the valleys, performing Stations of the Cross, staying in the monastery, holding monthly novenas, reciting the rosaries, etc.
- Third is righteousness. You must live a righteous life for God does not delight in the prayer of the wicked. A righteous life means keeping the laws of God as in Exodus 20, Leviticus 23, etc.
- Fourth, attentiveness. You have to forget the cares and worries of everyday life, and pay full attention, rapt attention, to God. You have to do this in silence, in quietness and in meditation. We should pay full attention to God because He gives to His children undivided attention. If God is looking at you, it seems as if you are the only person He in existence. He looks directly into your eyes. This is called the eyes of love. You are the apple of God’s eyes, His centre of attraction.
The time of prayer should not be spent on traveling, in buying and selling, roaming about, looking around, etc, unless otherwise unavoidable.
- Keep your prayers secret, in your heart. Unless, otherwise, necessary, like when you are praying for a sick person.
